WhatsApp tests third-party AI agent integration for Android users
Meta is testing a new WhatsApp feature that enables users to connect third-party AI agents directly to their accounts, allowing automated services to operate within dedicated individual chat windows. First spotted by WABetaInfo in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.35.3, the feature is currently rolling out to a limited group of beta testers in select regions. Accessible via a new “Agents” tab in the app’s settings menu, the functionality allows users to configure up to five external AI assistants using unique profile details and API keys generated by WhatsApp to bridge third-party platforms with the messaging app.
The framework supports both general conversational AI models and task-specific bots designed to execute predefined commands, opening up new channels for brand engagement, customer service, and conversational commerce. However, the integration introduces a distinct privacy architecture: messages exchanged with third-party agents are not protected by WhatsApp’s native end-to-end encryption, as data is processed via Meta services on behalf of external developers. To limit account exposure, Meta has sandboxed the agents, restricting them strictly to their dedicated conversation thread without access to a user’s broader chat history, contacts, media, or group chats.
Users retain administrative control over their automated integrations, with the ability to disconnect agents at any time through the app settings, which revokes the active API key while preserving the historic chat log. Re-establishing access requires generating a fresh API key and completing a new setup process. The trial reflects a broader industry shift toward transforming messaging applications into unified service hubs, though the initial restricted rollout, API limits, and adjusted encryption protocols define the current boundary of WhatsApp’s automated ecosystem.
