Victorian government touts major change to work-from-home rules

Fresh Victorian Premier Ben Carroll is facing pressure to overhaul controversial work-from-home laws that allow workers to work from home twice a week

Just 10 days into the job, Carroll is signalling change to the major policy he inherited from outgoing Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen, which was set to come into effect in September

The laws will give workers the right to work remotely twice a week, but business leaders are flagging major concerns among small businesses

Rising compliance costs, from funding home office supplies to bearing full liability for work-from-home injuries, are creating major headaches

This is hitting particularly hard in Victoria, where business owners are already doing it tough

Carroll has hinted that there will be slight changes. However, with the bill to return to Parliament next month, he did not note what they will be or when they will be made

“Work from home does work for families, and now it will go through that parliamentary process, and we will consider anything that is sensible,” Carroll said

“Sensible changes will always come up in any debate, and like any other debate, they will be considered.”

He has already made an immediate impact with Victoria, calling for a royal commission into the construction sector moments after becoming the state’s 50th premier

Carroll, who was elected unopposed to replace Jacinta Allan on Tuesday, said he would make the move his first action as premier — a stark contrast to his predecessor, who had refused calls for an inquiry into alleged union corruption

He said a special prosecutor would also work alongside the commission to assist it in its work

Carroll himself was 36 when he entered parliament, but was already experienced in the political arena
