Instagram has rolled out new parental support alerts globally, notifying parents using its supervision tools when their teen repeatedly searches for terms associated with suicide or self-harm within a short period

First unveiled earlier this year and initially introduced in selected markets, the feature is now available to supervising parents worldwide. It is intended to give parents greater visibility when their teen may need support, while directing them to re

Under the new system, a parent may receive an alert when their teen repeatedly attempts to search Instagram for phrases promoting suicide or self-harm, suggesting an intention to self-harm, or terms such as “suicide” and “self-harm”

Alerts can be sent through email, text message or WhatsApp, depending on the contact information available, as well as through an in-app notification. Parents will also be directed to expert-backed reen sensitively and constructively

The feature builds on Instagram’s existing safeguards around suicide and self-harm content. The platform already blocks searches for terms clearly associated with these topics, displaying no search results and instead directing users towards relevant re

Instagram also prohibits content that promotes or glorifies suicide or self-harm, while hiding other potentially sensitive content relating to the topics from teens

According to Meta, the parental alerts were developed in consultation with experts from its Suicide and Self-Harm Advisory Group. The company said the feature was designed to balance giving parents potentially useful information with avoiding unnecessary notifications

Meta is also developing similar parental alerts for some of its AI experiences. The planned feature would alert parents when a teen attempts to engage in certain conversations related to suicide or self-harm with Meta AI

The global rollout forms part of Instagram’s broader push to strengthen protections around Teen Accounts, which are designed with built-in restrictions for younger users while giving parents greater oversight through supervision tools

The move comes as Meta’s approach to safety and user controls around its AI products continues to face scrutiny. Last month, the company withdrew a newly launched feature within its Muse Image AI generation model following criticism over privacy concerns and its use of public Instagram accounts as references for AI-generated images

The feature, introduced alongside Muse Image, allowed users to tag public accounts as visual references when generating personalised images. While Meta said users could control whether their public content was available for use as a reference, the feature attracted backlash after users found the setting was enabled by default. Meta subsequently removed the feature just days after its launch
