If you do not follow the correct procedure, you could lose access to your old chat backups and data. In this report, we explain WhatsApp’s rules for changing your number and the correct process to follow:

Things to keep in mind before changing your number

Before starting the number-change process, check whether calling or SMS services have been activated on your new number. Also check whether your old number is still registered on WhatsApp

To check your old number, go to WhatsApp’s three-dot menu > Settings > Profile picture. Keep in mind that this change cannot be made through WhatsApp Web or the desktop app; you must use your primary phone

List of supported and unsupported numbers

WhatsApp does not support all types of numbers for registration

• Do not use these numbers: VoIP, toll-free, premium-rate, Universal Access Numbers (UANs), personal numbers and landlines.
• Landline rule: Landline numbers are supported only on the WhatsApp Business app.

If you change your number while using the same WhatsApp account, your blocked contacts will remain blocked and will not receive any information or notification about your new number

If you are changing your number and moving to a new phone, do not make the mistake of restoring the backup directly on the new phone

According to WhatsApp, a cloud backup is linked to the phone number with which it was created. Therefore, a backup taken with the old number cannot be restored using the new number

The correct method: First, change your number on your old phone using the steps given above. After this, use your new number to create a new chat backup on your Google Account

Now install WhatsApp on the new phone, register your new number and restore the new backup
