Google Finishes Rolling Out The August 2026 Spam Update

Update, August 21, 2026: The August 2026 spam update has finished rolling out, according to Google’s Search Status Dashboard. It ran from August 18 to August 21, 2026, a total of 2 days and 16 hours

Google has finished rolling out the August 2026 spam update, according to the Search Status Dashboard. The update applies globally and to all languages

The Dashboard recorded the update as an incident impacting ranking, beginning at 9:27 a.m. Pacific on August 18, with the release note posted at 9:28 a.m. PDT. The completion note went up at 1:49 a.m. PDT on August 21, 2026, putting the rollout at 2 days and 16 hours

Google didn’t post a blog article to go with either the release note or the completion note. As of publication, its spam updates page hasn’t changed since December

Google didn’t announce any new spam policy types with this rollout. Its existing spam policies are still the rules to check against

Spam Update History In 2026

The August 2026 spam update is the third Google has released this year. The March 2026 spam update was the fastest confirmed rollout in the dashboard’s history at 19 hours and 30 minutes. The June 2026 spam update took 2 days and 1 hour

The June update followed a May 15 clarification that Google’s spam policies also apply to attempts to manipulate generative AI responses in Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. As of publication, Google hasn’t said whether the August update targeted that behavior

Why This Matters

The rollout is closed, so Search Console data from after August 21, 2026 gives a cleaner read than anything pulled while the update was still moving. The weeks before August 18 work as the baseline for that comparison

Sites seeing fluctuations should check their compliance with existing policies. Google’s documentation says recovery can take months, since its automated systems need time to see that a site follows the rules

Looking Ahead

Google’s ranking release history page now lists the August update’s duration alongside the March and June entries. Any ranking changes tied to this update have already taken effect
