US FinTechAffirm is returning to Australia through an expanded partnership with Shopify, bringing Shop Pay Installments to Australian merchants for the first time
The instalment payment offering, powered exclusively by Affirm, will allow eligible Australian shoppers to spread purchases across fortnightly or monthly payments. Customers will be able to choose between interest-free and interest-bearing plans, with the total repayment amount shown upfront. Affirm said the product will not charge late fees
The launch marks Affirm’s return to the Australian market after previously operating in the country. Shop Pay Installments has processed billions of dollars in purchases since launching in 2021 and is available to shoppers in markets including the US, Canada and the UK
Australian merchants will be able to activate the service directly through Shopify’s admin dashboard, giving businesses another option for offering instalment payments at checkout
Affirm will assess each transaction individually through a real-time credit check before approving customers. The company said the model does not charge account fees, late fees or compounding interest. It added that more than 90% of its purchases in North America come from returning customers
In Australia, credit will be provided by Affirm Australia Pty Ltd, which holds Australian Credit Licence 569362. Shop Pay Installments will be offered through Shopify Commerce Singapore Pte. Ltd. as a credit representative of Affirm
All lending remains subject to eligibility, assessment and approval, with applicable interest terms disclosed upfront. The launch gives Shopify merchants access to Affirm’s instalment payment infrastructure as competition in Australia’s BNPL market continues to develop
Affirm Australia country manager Nitin Kashid said, “Australians helped shape Buy Now, Pay Later as we know it, which is why we expect more from it than most.”
“In partnership with Shopify, Affirm built Shop Pay Installments for the future – a way to pay with even more flexible terms and no late fees, ever,” Kashid added
Shopify VP of product, payments and cross-border Rohit Mishra said the partnership would give merchants another way to offer customers flexible payment options
“Bringing Shop Pay Installments to Australia unlocks even more flexibility and choice, helping our merchants continue to meet consumers where they are and how they like to shop,” Mishra said
Affirm and Shopify said they will continue exploring additional markets for Shop Pay Installments as demand for instalment payment options grows
