Texas State University earns Outstanding Achievement Award from Coursera

Texas State University has earned an Outstanding Achievement Award from Coursera for its Coursera Career Academy initiative. TXST was recognized for demonstrating excellence in learner engagement and creating a sustainable, institution-wide approach to student success, workforce readiness, academic innovation, and lifelong learning

The award recognizes the university’s success in transforming a voluntary, co-curricular learning opportunity into a broad engagement strategy that connects students, faculty, and staff with flexible, online, industry-recognized learning opportunities aligned with high-demand skills and career pathways

“Texas State’s Coursera Career Academy initiative demonstrates what is possible when career readiness becomes an integrated part of the student experience,” said Jorge F. Figueroa Flores, Ph.D., vice provost for Academic Innovation at TXST.

“By connecting students’ academic interests and majors with employer-valued skills and credentials, we are helping prepare Bobcats not only for their first opportunity after graduation, but for lifelong learning and career advancement.”

Through Coursera Career Academy, TXST provides students, faculty and staff with access to credentials and learning experiences from leading companies and organizations. For students, the initiative offers an opportunity to complement their academic majors with industry-recognized skills that can strengthen their competitiveness for internships, employment, and future career opportunities

The initiative also engaged faculty in exploring new approaches to teaching and curriculum innovation. Through webinars and the Coursera Faculty Institute, instructors learned how Coursera content could complement courses and support workforce-relevant competencies, creating opportunities for curricular integration alongside co-curricular learning

Rather than simply providing access to an online learning platform, TXST developed a coordinated engagement ecosystem involving students, faculty, staff, university leadership, media outreach, curriculum integration, and Student Government advocacy

Student Government support further demonstrated the campus-wide value of the initiative and helped reinforce the importance of accessible, career-focused learning opportunities for students

“Coursera Career Academy has helped Texas State build a culture in which students can pursue both the knowledge of their academic disciplines and the skills employers are seeking,” said Figueroa Flores. “This recognition reflects the collective work of our campus community to make career readiness and lifelong learning part of the Texas State experience.”

The Outstanding Achievement Award from Coursera recognizes TXST’s innovative approach to engagement and its commitment to preparing students for success in a changing workforce while fostering a culture of continuous learning.
