Google is testing showing citation cards at the bottom of AI Overview responses on desktop, instead of on the right side. Google tested variations of this at least twice before, once in March of 2026 and before that in September 2025

This one was spotted by Glenn Gabe and it is a nicer variation of the earlier tests. He posted screenshots on X and wrote, “I’m in an AIO test where the citations are stacked at the bottom of the answer on desktop. The right side citation bar is gone. And you can click show all to see a full list of citations at the bottom.”

Here is what it looks like closed (notice, nothing on the right side):

Here is how it looks after you click “show more. “

You can then expand to show more of these citation links:

Glenn added, “I sort of like it actually. Inline links you can hover over (like you normally can), but then a larger citation area at the bottom. Hmm… those links look much more enticing down there.”

But I am not sure, without clicking on the Show more button (unless Google automatically expanded them – which they can do), then there are no citation cards, just the link icons in the AI response.)

Here is how it normally looks with the citation cards on the right, even before you expand to show more:

Then when you expand:

A good compromise – maybe show the citation cards both on the right and on the bottom. 🙂
