Coursera vs. Chegg: Which EdTech Stock is the Better Buy Now?
COURCHGG

Online education platforms likeCoursera, Inc.COUR andChegg, Inc.CHGG are currently witnessing renewed relevance because education is increasingly shifting from a one-time degree model toward continuous, skills-based learning and employability. One of the major catalysts of this turnaround is the rapid adoption of generative AI and automation, as well as other factors like flexible learning, low-cost options and easy access to micro-credentials.

Coursera is a California-based online learning platform provider offering Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), certificate programs and degree programs in collaboration with universities and corporations. Meanwhile, Chegg’s online platform mainly focuses on homework help, textbook services and tutoring services through innovative digital models

Let’s compare the fundamentals of the two edtech stocks to determine which is the better investment now

The Case for Coursera Stock

Coursera is benefiting from its investments in AI-based options and the recent Udemy acquisition. On May 11, 2026, Coursera officially closed its combination with Udemy, meant to accelerate AI-powered innovation and create a comprehensive skills platform. The combined company is developing a unified platform that connects skills, personalized learning, practice and verified outcomes, supported by a skills and career graph with more than 2 million data points. Meanwhile, GenAI demand is accelerating, with nearly 10,000 GenAI courses across Coursera and Udemy and enrollment exceeding 45 per minute year to date.

Management believes this transaction is already generating meaningful efficiency gains, creating a potentially powerful catalyst for profitability. Additionally, the $100 million strategic investment in LearnVector, founded by Andrew Ng, could further accelerate personalized, one-to-one learning capabilities. If successfully executed, the AI-native platform could strengthen engagement, improve monetization and differentiate Coursera in an increasingly competitive online learning market.

COUR raised its expectation for annual run-rate net synergies to at least $85 million by the end of 2026, up from $80 million previously, and now expects to achieve the full $115 million target before the end of 2027, ahead of the original timeline. As integration progresses and duplicated costs are eliminated, these savings could provide greater operating leverage and support stronger earnings and free cash flow over the longer term. Coursera ended the second quarter of 2026 with approximately $982 million in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities, and no debt, providing substantial financial flexibility. This liquidity can support integration expenses, AI and platform investments, strategic opportunities and shareholder returns.

However, Coursera’s integration of Udemy is creating a substantial near-term financial burden. The company reported an $80.4 million net loss and negative $32.6 million free cash flow in the second quarter of 2026, with $79.8 million of merger, integration and restructuring costs weighing on earnings. Until these expenses subside and free cash flow improves, the merger could continue to pressure Coursera’s financial flexibility and near-term shareholder returns. Besides, on a normalized basis, total revenues declined 1% year over year, while Consumer revenues fell 5%, as consumer subscription growth is being offset by weakness in transactional offerings and disciplined paid marketing. These trends suggest that the combined company still faces a challenging underlying demand environment.

The Case for Chegg Stock

Chegg is leveraging its proprietary data, AI capabilities and student relationships to expand beyond academic services into the larger employability market. It plans to launch its next-generation platform in the third quarter of 2026, combining job search, matching, coaching, resume and cover-letter assistance, interview preparation and skills development. More than 10,000 students have already used the beta, providing early validation ahead of the broader rollout through 2027. Additionally, Chegg is benefiting from its large existing student reach and internships.com traffic. Its proprietary database includes more than 100 million Q&A pairs, providing a substantial data asset for personalized academic and job-related experiences.

CHGG’s AI-first restructuring is materially improving operating efficiency and profitability despite a challenging revenue environment. In the second quarter of 2026, adjusted operating expenses fell nearly 50% year over year to $32.3 million, while adjusted EBITDA reached $9.1 million, representing a 17% margin. Free cash flow was $6.4 million as of June 30, 2026, including approximately $1.5 million of restructuring-related severance payments. In the first half, Chegg generated $9.5 million of free cash flow despite $14.4 million of severance costs, highlighting improving cash-generation efficiency.

Owing to its growing trends, Chegg has significantly strengthened its financial position, creating greater flexibility to invest in its transformation while returning capital to shareholders. At the end of the second quarter of 2026, the company held $72.3 million of cash and investments, a $38.5 million net cash position and repurchased $1.7 million of shares. Management also expects to fully repay its convertible debt in the third quarter of 2026, which should further reduce financial obligations and improve flexibility. Importantly, Chegg expects to remain free-cash-flow positive in the second half of 2026, supporting continued investment and potential capital returns.

However, the edtech company continues to face significant top-line pressure as AI reshapes the education market and reduces demand for its traditional academic services. Although Chegg Study’s monthly retention remains strong, the company acknowledged declining revenues and user traffic as key risks. The transition toward an employability-focused model is still in its early stages, meaning the new platform must offset continued deterioration in the legacy business. This creates uncertainty around the timing and magnitude of any sustainable return to growth.

Stock Performance & Valuation

As witnessed from the chart below, during the past six months, Chegg’s share price performance has outperformed Coursera’s, with the latter indicating a declining trend

Considering valuation, over the last five years, Coursera has been trading above Chegg on a forward 12-month price-to-sales (P/S) ratio basis

Which EdTech Stock Has More Upside Potential: COUR or CHGG?

Coursera and Chegg are adapting to an evolving edtech landscape shaped by generative AI, skills-based learning and demand for flexible education

Coursera is benefiting from its Udemy combination, AI investments and expanding skills platform. Nearly 10,000 GenAI courses are available across the combined platform, with enrollment exceeding 45 per minute. COUR also has nearly $982 million in cash and marketable securities with no debt. However, normalized revenues declined 1% year over year in the second quarter, while net loss reached $80.4 million and FCF was negative $32.6 million.

Chegg faces steeper revenue pressure but is showing meaningful cost and cash-flow improvements. Adjusted operating expenses fell nearly 50% year over year to $32.3 million, while adjusted EBITDA reached $9.1 million, or a 17% margin. Chegg also generated $9.5 million of first-half FCF despite restructuring costs and is transitioning toward an employability platform

Given that both the edtech stocks currently carry Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), CHGG stock offers greater potential for a valuation-driven rebound, supported by improving profitability, positive FCF and a discounted valuation. However, COUR stock has stronger projected EPS growth, higher ROE and greater financial resources, making the choice dependent on whether investors prioritize growth in comparison to turnaround priorities.
