Biomedical engineering technology connects graduates to healthcare careers | Penn State University

McKEESPORT, Pa. — When people think about careers in healthcare, doctors and nurses may be the first professions that come to mind. But behind the scenes, healthcare technology management (HTM) professionals help keep the medical equipment and technology used in patient care safe, reliable and ready when it is needed

Penn State’s biomedical engineering technology (BET) program prepares students for careers in this field through hands-on experience and coursework focused on technology, problem-solving and healthcare

BET graduates are working in HTM roles across the industry including at companies like TRIMEDX, a healthcare technology management company that supports health care systems including UPMC

“I’m proud to share that within our TRIMEDX team, we have 43 Penn State biomedical engineering technology graduates,” said Matt Yingling, network vice president of clinical engineering at TRIMEDX. “Their expertise, leadership and commitment to patient care make a difference every single day across the healthcare systems we support.”

Current BET students also gain professional experience through internships, applying what they learn in the classroom to healthcare technology settings. Four current BET students are completing internships with TRIMEDX this year

“The Penn State biomedical engineering technology program continues to produce talented professionals who bridge the gap between healthcare and technology,” Yingling said

The BET program and Penn State Greater Allegheny Admissions also partnered with Allegheny Health Network and Allegheny General Hospital to introduce Pittsburgh Promise Ambassadors to the BET program and the HTM field. The hospital’s clinical engineering team, which includes Penn State New Kensington alumni and student interns, provided a behind-the-scenes tour and showed students how clinical engineering professionals support patient care.

“To any students exploring career options: if you enjoy technology, problem solving, healthcare and making a meaningful impact without being at the bedside, consider a career in healthcare technology management. It might just be the perfect path you’ve never heard of,” Yingling said
