From network signals to business decisions | IBM

At 9:17 AM, a critical service slows to a crawl. Application teams see rising transaction time. NetOps sees a shifting path. CloudOps sees healthy infrastructure. Every team has some data. Yet no one has the whole story and no one sees how the data is connected. In a hybrid enterprise, the advantage comes from connecting those signals, understanding what is happening and deciding what to do next

Applications now span cloud regions, containers, on-premises systems, third-party services and networks that enterprises might not directly control. A slowdown can appear in an application trace while originating in a congested path, an unstable dependency or a poorly placed workload. When each team investigates in isolation, every dashboard can be accurate, and the organization can still reach the wrong conclusion.

That fragmentation creates visibility without clarity. NetOps might see loss, latency or route variability but lack application context. Application teams might see failed transactions or slow services but have no view of the paths carrying them. Leadership is left arbitrating between dashboards while customers wait

Omdia’s research, “The Return of NetDevOps: Inside the Convergence of AI, Networking and Automation,” makes the urgency tangible. It finds that 93% of respondents see network automation as essential to keeping pace with change, and 89% believe networking is becoming more critical as AI arrives. Yet, on average, fewer than half of network management and operational tasks are automated. The ambition is clear, but the operational foundation is still catching up.

Unified application and network observability closes the gap between application and network management. It brings flow data, path and topology intelligence, device telemetry, application dependencies, service latency and transaction insight into one app-aware view. Teams can start with a business-impacting service symptom, follow it through the stack and isolate exactly where variability enters the experience.

Correlating network performance monitoring (NPM) and application performance monitoring (APM) with shared context, including application identity, cloud location, topology and ownership, helps network and application teams work from the same evidence. Omdia’s findings show that the market is moving in this direction: 61% of organizations are integrating network observability into full-stack initiatives, while 58% have already integrated NPM with APM and another 34% plan to do so.

For leaders, convergence changes the conversation from “Who owns the problem?” to “Which action protects experience, resilience and cost?” Teams can avoid scaling an application to compensate for a bad path, identify cross-cloud inefficiencies and redirect budget from prolonged control rooms to optimization work. This optimization work shows up on the P&L, a direct answer to the cost and business-alignment pressure most I&O leaders are carrying into 2026.

It also frees something scarcer than budget: time. Every hour a team spends reconciling dashboards during a control room is an hour not spent on strategic planning

Synthetic monitoring adds an outside-in point of truth. It can validate expected user experience, detect degradation in SaaS and third-party dependencies and provide pre- and post-change assurance. Correlated with APM and NPM, synthetic signals help determine whether an issue is systemic or localized, and whether runtime behavior matches design intent

This combination moves observability beyond reactive troubleshooting. Real telemetry describes the live system, network intelligence explains delivery conditions and synthetics provide a consistent expectation against which both can be measured

The need for coherent context grows as operations become more automated. AI can accelerate analysis, identify patterns and recommend or execute actions—but it can also amplify fragmented assumptions. Autonomous systems do not fail quietly; they can fail at scale

Omdia’s NetDevOps research shows that organizations recognize the stakes: 92% say NetDevOps can deliver important technical advantages and 90% plan to increase NetDevOps spending. But investment produces confidence only when automation is fed by trusted, contextual signals

Unified observability thus becomes the ground-truth layer for safer NetDevOps and agentic workflows. Decisions can be grounded in correlated service, network and synthetic evidence; recommendations become easier to explain and audit; and automation can optimize continuously without losing sight of business intent

The organizations that lead the next phase of digital operations will not be the ones collecting the most signals. They will be the organizations that connect signals, context and action across applications and networks
