OpenAI has announced a new set of features designed to improve the safety of teenagers using ChatGPT.

The company said that preventing teenagers from using artificial intelligence altogether is not the solution, as AI will be one of the most influential technologies shaping their generation.
OpenAI noted that around 90% of teenagers use ChatGPT every week for learning, research, or organizing tasks, making appropriate safeguards essential.A Safer Experience for Teen UsersChatGPT will now use age estimation to automatically apply an age-appropriate experience whenever it detects that a user may be under 18. If the system cannot determine a user’s age with confidence, it will default to the safety settings designed for teenagers.
These protections include additional restrictions on content involving graphic violence, self-harm, body image disorders, and dangerous online challenges.
ChatGPT will also begin sending periodic reminders encouraging teenagers to take breaks during extended use, helping them step away from the screen at regular intervals.Expanded Parental ControlsOpenAI has enhanced its parental control options, allowing parents to set designated quiet hours during which ChatGPT cannot be used.
Parents can also disable Voice Mode and control whether their children have access to image generation features.
In certain sensitive situations, parents may receive notifications if the system detects signals that could indicate a risk of self-harm or other behaviors that may require attention.New Learning FeaturesThe update also aims to make ChatGPT a stronger educational tool rather than simply a source of ready-made answers.
Study Mode, developed by OpenAI in collaboration with teachers and education experts, helps students solve problems step by step instead of immediately providing the final answer.
Parents can enable Study Mode by default for their children’s accounts through the parental control settings.
The company has also introduced ready-made prompts to help students complete homework assignments, along with interactive tools for mathematics and science.
These learning tools are currently used by around 18 million users each week across more than 250 subjects.
OpenAI said the updates are designed to help teenagers benefit from artificial intelligence while keeping learning, creativity, and safety as the top priorities.
