Each agent is isolated to its own thread and cannot access other chats, contacts, or media. Messages with these agents bypass end-to-end encryption because they are processed through a Meta service on behalf of the developer, who can view the messages while the service runs. The capability, spotted in the Android beta version 2.26.35.3 on September 4, allows up to five external agents per account. Users can set one up through a new Agents section in settings, assigning it a name and profile photo before WhatsApp generates an API key that gets pasted into the hosting platform to complete the connection<\/p>\n

Each agent operates inside its own one-on-one chat, walled off from the rest of the account. It can read only the messages in that thread and has no access to other conversations, contacts, or media files. Agents cannot be added to group chats or communities at this stage. WhatsApp also cautions that AI-generated answers may be inaccurate and that users should verify anything an agent tells them<\/p>\n

Removing an agent severs the connection but leaves the chat history intact. Reconnecting later requires generating a fresh API key and starting over<\/p>\n

The privacy architecture marks a deliberate departure from WhatsApp’s long-standing encryption promise. Messages sent to external agents are not protected by end-to-end encryption because they pass through a Meta service acting on behalf of the third-party developer. While that service is running, the developer can see the messages. Meta maintains this does not expose the chats to unrelated parties, and that normal calls and messages between people remain fully encrypted.<\/p>\n

The move reverses an earlier posture. When platforms like OpenClaw first gained traction, users who connected bots to WhatsApp accounts to communicate with remote agents often found those accounts banned. Telegram, by contrast, welcomed the trend and became a popular hub for chatting with agents running locally or in the cloud. Meta is now positioning itself to compete directly with Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI in the race to embed AI agents into everyday messaging.<\/p>\n

The company has already signaled its ambitions in this space. In June, Meta launched a business agent capable of handling payments, bookings, and sales across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger, alongside a platform for companies to build custom agents. Naomi Gleit, Meta’s product head, said the goal was to move beyond rule-based automation<\/a>s and let the software handle tasks on its own<\/p>\n

The current rollout is limited to a small pool of Android users in select countries. A wider release is expected over the coming months, though no firm date has been set for a global launch<\/p>\n

For developers and AI labs, the appeal is straightforward: a simple API key now unlocks access to one of the world’s largest messaging audiences. For WhatsApp, the feature creates a new environment where automated customer-service, commerce, and task-specific agents could operate through a chat interface rather than standalone apps or websites. The trade-off, however, is a tiered privacy system in which conversations with third-party bots do not enjoy the same protections as person-to-person messages.<\/p>\n
