Kenyan businesses that rely on WhatsApp to communicate with customers could soon face higher operating costs after Meta announced changes to its business messaging model<\/p>\n

The changes are set to take effect on October 1, 2026, and will affect businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform to communicate with customers at scale<\/p>\n

The platform is widely used by businesses to respond to customer enquiries, process orders, provide transaction updates and promote products and services<\/p>\n

The new pricing model means businesses will have to factor messaging costs into their digital communication budgets, potentially increasing the cost of serving customers through the platform<\/p>\n

\u201cFor any Solution Provider or directly-integrated businesses that does\u00a0not\u00a0have a payment method on file by September 30, 2026, Meta will\u00a0stop delivering service messages\u00a0as of when they become charged on October 1, 2026. To avoid disruptions to your service messages, please\u00a0add a payment method\u2060\u00a0for your WhatsApp Business Account(s) by September 30, 2026,\u201d Meta said in a notice<\/p>\n

Small and medium-sized enterprises are among the businesses that could be affected by the changes, particularly those that rely heavily on WhatsApp for sales and customer support<\/p>\n

Many Kenyan businesses have adopted WhatsApp as a key communication channel because of its convenience and ability to connect businesses directly with customers<\/p>\n

The platform is also increasingly integrated into e-commerce systems, with businesses using automated messages for order confirmations, delivery notifications and customer support<\/p>\n

The introduction of new charges could force some businesses to review how frequently they communicate with customers and prioritise messages that are considered essential<\/p>\n

Companies using automated systems and chatbots may also need to assess their messaging volumes and the costs associated with maintaining WhatsApp-based customer service<\/p>\n

Meta\u2019s business messaging model distinguishes between<\/a> different categories of messages, including marketing and service-related communications<\/p>\n

Marketing messages are used by businesses to promote products, offers and services, while service messages are generally linked to customer interactions and transactions<\/p>\n

The changes could therefore have a direct impact on businesses that use WhatsApp extensively for digital marketing campaigns<\/p>\n

However, the new charges are aimed at businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform and should not be confused with charges for ordinary personal WhatsApp conversations<\/p>\n

For SMEs operating on tight margins, the additional messaging costs could influence decisions on how often to send promotional content, how customer support is structured and whether alternative communication channels should be explored<\/p>\n

The development marks another shift in the way major technology platforms are monetising tools that have become essential to businesses, particularly small enterprises operating online<\/p>\n
