Economists aren&apos;t so sure\">recent<\/a> years<\/p>\n<p>Singapore, the region\u2019s second-largest economy, lost over $2.8 billion to scams from 2020 through the first half of 2025, Home Affairs Minister Sim Ann told parliament last November<\/p>\n<p>The new rules under the Online Criminal Harms Act target services deemed to \u201cpose the highest risk of scams\u201d in the country, Singapore\u2019s police said Tuesday<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestment scams are a key concern on online messaging platforms,\u201d the police said in a statement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this variant, scammers approach victims using accounts not previously known to the victim (\u2018unknown contact\u2019) to offer lucrative investment products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seven online services \u2014 WhatsApp, Telegram, WeChat, Apple iMessage, Apple FaceTime, Google Messages and Google Meet \u2014 must now obtain users\u2019 consent before unknown contacts can add them to groups or channels<\/p>\n<p>They must also warn users about suspicious accounts and allow users to silence, filter or block communications<\/p>\n<p>A separate code covering Facebook, <a href=\"https:\/\/justfineinfotech.com\/fr\/instagram-rolls-out-global-alerts-for-teen-self-harm-searches\/\" title=\"Instagram rolls out global alerts for teen self-harm searches\">Instagram<\/a> and TikTok will require platforms to block suspected scam advertisements, verify advertisers\u2019 identities against government records and ensure financial services advertised to Singapore users are offered by licensed providers<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2025\u2026 Facebook, Instagram and TikTok accounted for about 30 percent of total scam cases. Facebook alone accounted for about 18 percent of total scam cases,\u201d the statement read<\/p>\n<p>E-commerce services such as Carousell, Facebook Marketplace and Facebook Business will also be required to introduce stronger login safeguards<\/p>\n<p>Platforms have until January 31, 2027, to comply, while measures against \u201cspoofing\u201d \u2014 imitating the Singapore government \u2014 must be in place by end-September<\/p>\n<p>Failure to comply could result in financial penalties of up to 1 million Singapore dollars ($782,500), the police said<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Singaporean
