Yet, there is reason to believe that WordPress may turn around<\/p>\n<h2>Initially Just A Modest Decline<\/h2>\n<p>From 2022, W3Techs\u2019 quarterly statistics show WordPress market share holding steady at about 43.0% . In 2023 WordPress usage had a slight increase to about 43.2%. That modest level of growth continued in 2024. But that pace of growth slowed in 2025 and turned into a modest decline in 2025 that was easy to hand wave away.<br \/>\nFor 2025, the W3Techs\u2019 statistics five consecutive quarters of modest decline in market share, a barely noticeable 0.60% drop.<\/p>\n<h3>WP Declines For 5 Consecutive Quarters<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>2025 Jan 43.6%<\/li>\n<li>2025 Apr 43.5%<\/li>\n<li>2025 Jul 43.4%<\/li>\n<li>2025 Oct 43.3%<\/li>\n<li>2026 Jan 43.0%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>43.6 \u2013 43.0 = 0.60. That modest decline could almost be explained as a rounding error. But it\u2019s more than that: it is a trend, five quarters of consecutive decline. What happened next is that the pace of that decline doubled<\/p>\n<h2>Market Share Decline Quickens<\/h2>\n<p>The pace of decline quickened beginning in December 2025 and consistently maintained that pace through May 27, 2026, where the W3Techs data currently ends. WordPress market share stood at 43.20% in December 2025 and declined to 41.90% by May 27, 2026. That\u2019s a drop of 1.3 percentage points in six months, double what it was for the entire year of 2025 (January 1, 2025 \u2013 January 1, 2026)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is the six month consecutive decline in market share beginning in December 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dec 2025: 43.20%<\/li>\n<li>Jan 2026: 43.00%<\/li>\n<li>Feb 2026: 42.80%<\/li>\n<li>Mar 2026: 42.70%<\/li>\n<li>Apr 2026: 42.50%<\/li>\n<li>May 27, 2026: 41.90%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some may shrug that it\u2019s only 1.3 percentage points. What makes this decline notable is that it\u2019s part of a larger trend that stretches back five consecutive quarters and that the pace of that decline has now doubled<\/p>\n<p>Further, this is a consistent trend; there is something to see here. Instead of waiting for a five or ten percent drop, wouldn\u2019t it be prudent to at least consider <em>why<\/em> the pace of decline is getting faster?<\/p>\n<h2>Let\u2019s Consider The Pace Of Decline<\/h2>\n<p>The other platforms listed listed in the current W3Techs graph are either stable, or show modest growth or decline. We can also see this anecdotally. Based on our experience at Barn2, and our interactions with other plugin companies, we can confirm that most WordPress companies reported slower growth in 2022 than in previous years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Her article lists the possible reasons for the 2023 WordPress slow down:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased competition<\/li>\n<li>Security concerns<\/li>\n<li>Poor usability<\/li>\n<li>Negativity over Gutenberg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She\u2019s right about WordPress having stronger <a href=\"https:\/\/justfineinfotech.com\/fr\/7-leading-competitor-ai-visibility-tools-for-2026\/\" title=\"7 Leading Competitor AI Visibility Tools for 2026\">competitor<\/a>s. For example, Wix was long known for its poor performance metrics. That\u2019s not longer the case. Not only does Wix consistently beat WordPress on Google\u2019s Core Web Vitals (CWV) performance metrics, WordPress consistently ranks last for CWV in the HTTPArchive CWV technology comparisons which are based on real-world website visits<\/p>\n<h2>Another Possible Reason For Declining Market Share<\/h2>\n<p>W3Techs statistics show that WordPress\u2019s market share decline began in the quarter after Mullenweg initiated his public attacks against WP Engine<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mullenweg\u2019s actions included:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating an anti-WP Engine website encouraging their users to abandon WPE and sign up with other web hosts<\/li>\n<li>Temporarily preventing tens of thousands of WPE hosted WordPress users from updating their websites<\/li>\n<li>Requiring all contributors signing in to their WordPress.org accounts to tick a box confirming that they were \u201cnot affiliated with WP Engine in any way, financially or otherwise.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Cloning premium plugins owned by WP Engine and releasing them for free.<\/li>\n<li>Preventing WP Engine employees from accessing their WordPress.org accounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Did those actions cause WordPress to begin losing market share?<\/p>\n<p>The W3Techs quarterly market share report shows that WordPress enjoyed a period of moderate growth before Mullenweg\u2019s conflict and then a downturn immediately after<\/p>\n<h3>W3Techs Quarterly Market Share Report<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/justfineinfotech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/w3techs-screenshot-2-934.png\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>The period in green precedes Mullenweg\u2019s WPE conflict. For 2026 as of today, virtually all the other top content management platforms are holding steady and growing. Only Joomla is showing a modest decline and that\u2019s only of 0.1 percentage point<\/p>\n<p>This decline in WordPress market share isn\u2019t an anomaly at W3Techs.
